Planning and coordinating Maternal/Fetal and Neonatal services are major activities for Perinatal Services BC and its partners (health authorities, ministries, community services, etc.)
Partnering with clinicians and health-care leaders, British Columbia’s Tiers of Service framework establishes a unified understanding and a shared language for describing clinical services. This framework enhances service planning for all patients across B.C. hospitals. Learn more about the provincial Tiers of Service framework.
In 2020, initial versions of Maternal/Fetal and Neonatal Tiers of Service modules were developed by interprofessional working groups comprised of representatives from B.C.’s health authorities (including obstetricians, perinatologists, pediatricians, neonatologists, general practitioners, nurses, midwives, health directors/managers and planners), other experts from across B.C., and a meeting facilitator.
These modules are currently under revision, as part of work to establish the provincial Tiers of Service framework for hospital-based services in B.C.
The Maternal/Fetal and Neonatal Tiers of Service outline responsibilities and requirements to provide a safe, sustainable and appropriate level of service. Facilities must be capable of meeting, at a minimum, all criteria described for their relevant tier on a planned basis. This, in turn, can assist with the planning and development of services appropriate to the needs of the relevant catchment area (local, regional and/or provincial).
