Newborn Nursing Care Pathway

The Newborn Nursing Care Pathway identifies the needs for care of newborns and is the foundation for the BC Newborn Clinical Path.

Assessment criteria are organized into five main sections but are not intended to be viewed as separate from one another:

  • Physiological Health
  • Behavioural
  • Infant Feeding
  • Health Follow-Up
  • Screening/Other

Assessments are entered into specific periods, from immediately after birth to seven days postpartum and beyond. These are guidelines to be used to ensure that all assessment criteria have been captured. Once the newborn and mother are in their own surroundings, details of physical assessments will be performed based on the individual nursing judgment in consultation with the mother.
