Human milk is best for babies. It is the first traditional food, providing essential nutrients tailored to each baby's needs. Feeding babies human milk boosts the health of babies, new parents and the broader community.
The importance of human milk is widely recognized and supported by trusted health experts at organizations like the World Health Organization, Health Canada, the Canadian Paediatric Society, and Perinatal Services BC.
In celebration of World Human Milk Donation Day on May 19, we encourage families to consider donating extra milk. Donating your extra milk can help save the lives of sick or premature babies who need extra nourishment and don't have access to their mother's/parent's milk. Donor milk has active beneficial properties similar to a mother's/parent's own milk, like providing babies with antibodies to fight disease and infection. The demand for milk is high and often exceeds supply. New donors are always needed.
If you are interested in donating milk, you can get started by completing the donor screening process at BC Women's Provincial Milk Bank. They also have a helpful video explaining how to become a donor.
Thank you for supporting the BC Women's Provincial Milk Bank. Every drop makes a difference.
