BC Perinatal Health Program Workshops

1. Fetal Health Surveillance Instructor Course:
This two day workshop is designed for those who would like to teach intrapartum Fetal Health Surveillance in their facility/region. Instructor teaching materials are avaliable through this program. This is a certificate course.

2. Neonatal Resuscitation Program Instructor Course:
This full day workshop is for those who would like to teach NRP in their facility/region. Once having completed all requirements, the participant will have 3 - 4 months to develop and facilitate a provider program. This return demonstration is the final step in becoming an NRP instructor. A current NRP provider card is a prerequisite for this course.

3. ACoRN:
This full day workshop will focus on: the principles of stabilizatin, how you can manage the common acute neonatal problems seen in BC; how you can determine which infants need to be transferred; what you can do before the Transport Team arrives; what help you can expect from the tertiary care unit before the transport team arrives and what the Infant Transport Team requires of you. Participants will be provided an opportunity to practice key neonatal skills used in the management of a sick infant.

4. Obstetrical Emergencies:
This half day workshop is designed as an update of skills for physicians, midwives and nurses in managing "difficult" births. Modules include: shoulder dystocia, forceps/vacuum extraction, breech, postpartum haemorrhage. Emphasis will be on hands on skill practice with instructors.

5. Breastfeeding the Preterm Infant:
This half day workshop will incorporate the BCPHP interdisciplinary guideline on breastfeeding the preterm infant. The workshop includes principles to promote breastfeeding of the premature infant as well as management (assessment) guidelines. Clinical management topics cover a wide variety of pertinent issues such as the expression and storage of breastmilk, Kanagroo care, non - nutritive sucking, beginning enteral feeds, supplementary feeding, progression to full breastfeeding and planning the transition to home.

6. Maternal Assessment, Stabilization and Transport:
This half day workshop is particulary applicable to small urban and rural centers who provide maternity care and make decisions about transport for women antenatally and in labour. Ths workshop includes antenatal record review, general fetal assessment including intermittent auscultation and electonic fetal monitoring, data on maternal transportation in BC; and step by step process for planning and transport. An overview of key areas regarding need for transport include assessment and management of preterm labour, steroid administration, prelabour rupture of the membranes, induction or augmentation of labour, hypertension in pregnancy, and antepartum hemorrhage.
