What is NRP? |
|
|
NRP is an education program designed to teach principles and techniques of resuscitation of newly born babies in the hospital environment. The concepts taught are also applicable for pre hospital resuscitation of newborns and resuscitation of young infants.
NRP is not a certification course
Completion of the program does not imply that an individual has the competence to perform neonatal resuscitation. Each hospital is responsible for determining the level of competence and qualifications required for someone to assume clinical responsibility for neonatal resuscitation. (Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation, 2006, p. xi)
The Neonatal Resuscitation Program has been designed to teach an evidence based approach to resuscitation of the newborn. The causes, prevention, and management of mild to severe neonatal asphyzia are carefully explained so that health professionals may develop optimal knowledge and skill in resuscitation.

NRP Instructor Course
This two day course is for those who have a current NRP provider card and would like to teach NRP in their facility.
Following the workshop, the participant will have 3 to 4 months to complete a return demonstration as the final step becoming an instructor (with help from and instructor trainer to develop and provide a provider program).
Prerequisites for those wishing to become NRP Instructors are the following:
-
A current NRP Provider Card
-
A practicing MD, RN, RM, or RT
-
Hospital / agency support
-
Complete a return demonstration at a later date
CME Credits and Registration in the Provincial NRP Instructor Database will take place upon successful completion of the return demonstration.
NRP Provider Course
The Provider Course is an education program designed for healthcare providers whose job responsibilities may require them to participate in neonatal resuscitations. It teaches the knowledge and skills required for resuscitation of newborns. The skills taught include positioning, suctioning, use of oxygen, bag and mask ventilation, chest compressions, endotracheal intubation, and using medications.
The program is taught through the use of:
-
Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation and/or accompanying DVD-ROM (self study)
-
Instructors for discussion, demonstration of procedures, and evaluation.
Upon successful completion of the program, a NRP Provider course completion card will be issued by CPS. The card is valid for 2 years and may be renewed by taking a Provider Renewal Course.
The majority of hospitals in BC that provide perinatal care have in-house NRP Instructors.

How do I apply for Continuing Education Credits for our NRP Programs?
Many health professionals are required to complete continuing education hours in order to meet their Regulatory College requirements for certificates of competence. At this time, this requirement applies primarily to physicians. Nurses who have completed special certification programs (e.g. CNA Certification Program) often receive credit based on the amount of hours attended. Please check with your specific professional regualtory body for their specific requirements.
CRNBC's Continuing Competence Program
In BC, completing the NRP Program can contribute towards CRNBC's continuing competence program.
College of Family Physicians of Canada Continuing Education Credits
NRP (and other advanced life support and resuscitation programs) are eligible for Mainpro-C credits. Eight Mainpro-C credits can be claimed for each of these programs, and 4 Mainpro-C credits can be claimed for any of the recertification courses. Each one also has some additional Mainpro-M1 credits to make up the total number of hours. Up to four different programs can be submitted for Mainpro-C credits in any 5 year period to a maximum of 16 Mainpro-C credits. Any programs attended beyond this maximum are eligible for the usual mumber of Mainpro-M1 credits.
Members can also claim Mainpro-C credits for attending the instructor training courses for these programs and for teaching the provider and recertification courses. They can submit up to the same number of credits as for providers.

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons |
|
NRP has been aporoved by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons for continuing medical education (Maintenance of Certification - MOC) credits, through the Canadian Pediatric Society. Participants registering their credits should log on to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons website. The number of Section 1 Accredited Group Learning Activity credits (MOC) is based on the number of hours of instruction.
