The BC Perinatal Health Program is transitioning to Perinatal Services BC (PSBC). Perinatal Services BC is being established based on the operational review of its predecessor, Provincial Specialized Perinatal Services. Reporting to the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), PSBC will build on previous work done to improve the capacity and processes of provincial perinatal services through strategic leadership across a range of initiatives, with an overriding commitment to quality, accountability and resource planning, education and knowledge transfer, performance targets development and monitoring, and clinical standards achievement.
PSBC has an oversight responsibility that is province wide including:
- Accountability for level 3 neonatal intensive care (NICU) and specialized acute maternity beds, and
- Oversight via collaboration with stakeholders, and especially health authorities, regarding level 1 and 2 neonatal and high risk maternity beds, as well as other perinatal services across the care continuum, from public health, to primary and community care, to hospital care.
PSBC will use a client-centric population health approach as the orientation for perinatal services across the province and as the basis of its shared mandate with partners and stakeholders. PSBC will also continue to build on some strong foundations established by its predecessor, most specifically the BC Perinatal Health Program, which includes Provincial Specialized Perinatal Services and the Perinatal Data Registry.
